Course Description

COURSE INSTRUCTOR:

You should have no difficulty in arranging to see me at a time convenient to both of us. If I am not in my office you can ask my secretary (Mrs. J. Porter, Johnson 117a) to give me a message. If you are having any difficulties in this course, please make sure that you discuss them with me.

TIME:

Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. in Johnson 200 (BWH)

TEXT:

This course will cover material in Chapters 1-10, 13 and will be supplemented with considerable additional material. The text can be purchased in the bookstore. You might also consider purchasing the Student Companion that accompanies this text. A PDF-based formula sheet can be obtained by clicking on Formula Sheet.

REFERENCE TEXTS:

The list of texts below can be found on reserve in the library. There are many other excellent introductory physics texts in the physics section of the Library.

The Midterm test date is Wednesday October 30th. Tests cannot be given at other times, except in cases of illness or other emergencies and these cases must be confirmed with notes from medical doctors or the Dean. Supplemental examinations will not be offered.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Class assignments must be handed in on the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted unless special permission has been granted. Students are encouraged to work in groups when doing assignments. However students MUST NOT copy the assignment solutions of other students.

PHYSICS HELP CENTRE:

The Physics Help Centre is an important resource for students in this course. It is located in Johnson 1 and is open about 12 hours per week. The schedule is posted on the door. The Centre is run by Prof. Jonas Goliasch (a physics professor) with the assistance of helpful graduate students who understand the problems that you are confronting in trying to master the material. Please go to the Centre just to work on problems from the book. You will be glad that you did.
