SYNOPSIS:    EDU 412a Methods in the Teaching of Mathematics - Secondary

This course will focus on strategies for the teaching of Mathematics in the secondary school curriculum. Students will gain an understanding of the general curriculum objectives, trends and teaching methods through lectures, practice in the problem-solving approach, and discussions of appropriate means for assessment. Students may do projects and assignments related to course topics at the secondary or adult education levels.

EDU 413a Methods in the Teaching of Science - Secondary

Using computer technology as an integral part of the learning process, this course focuses on strategies for teaching the sciences in the secondary school curriculum. Students will work in teams on inquiry questions which will challenge them to develop a deeper understanding of issues currently under investigation by the science community. Learning will take place through problem-solving activities, various research forums, and lectures. The course will provide an understanding of the scientific method and the role of technology in the approach to scientific problems in society.

ASSIGNMENTS:      Assignments will help students develop comprehensive lesson plans in appropriate subject areas.  No extensions will be granted.

STUDENT PRESENTATION:         Each student will be required to submit a full lesson plan for a 30 min lecture, which they will conduct in the final class period.

MARKING:               Assignments:       75%                        Presentation:         25%
